I miss the Organic Grain business. This is Spelt by the way, which is a non-GMO grain that goes back about 5,000 to 8,000 years.
We had all kinds of goodies from pre-made Spelt bread mix, pancake mixes, and more. Along with 1/2 a dozen types of organic flours like Buckwheat and others. Oh yea, Bread, Granola Bars, and some other cool products. All Amish made goodness. Fun Fact: Did you know Buckwheat is not wheat at all? 🙂 It is part of the Polygonaceae family. It is also known sometimes as Kasha.
Anywhoodle, then one day, I read a book, Wheat Belly by Dr. Davis, and then proceeded to go all OCD on research for about a month because I could not believe what I read. I mean it was mind-blowing however I could not ignore my own conclusions.
Shortly thereafter, even though we were growing at a hockey stick pace, I shut down the business. All the work that went into finding the farmers, the mill, the packaging, labeling, marketing, and branding. Poof!
Definitely one of the easiest and toughest decisions I have had to do for sure. Because once I dug in and found out how truly Horribly bad grain consumption is for people, I could no longer in good conscious, sell "Healthy Whole Grain Products". Because there are little things called Lectins which all grains have that are bio-poisons that I found grain consumption was linked to:
Heart Attacks - Carbs are a huge contributor, not fat and Cholesterol
Obesity
Diabetes
Dementia
Alzheimer's
GERD - The only study with a 100% efficacy for getting rid of it, i.e. severe heartburn is a low-carb diet study done at Vanderbilt University.
Osteoporosis - Especially in women - Grains greatly impair Calcium absorption
Anemia
Leaky Gut Syndrome
Auto-Immune Disorders
Mood Disorders and Depression
Schizophrenia
Epilepsy
Psoriasis
Behavioral Problems in Children
Stunted Growth in Children
Just to name a few.
So that was the beginning of my Keto journey.
Still pretty though!
